In this unit, I learned the Beatitudes are from the New Testament and is different from the Ten Commandments to an extent. On the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught his disciples the eight Beatitudes, which are the things and acts individuals should do. In the Old Testament, the Ten Commandments are things an individual should avoid and not follow. The Beatitudes can also be seen as "guidelines for happiness." The Beatitudes is a guideline for people to act and follow. This is a resemblance of what God hoped for us to be.
The beatitude that resonates with me is: "Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth." This beatitude states that individuals should always be gentle and humbly accept that we need God in everything, no matter how powerful we are. Even if we have everything we need and want, we need to continue to pray and ask for God's help through everything to nourish the soul. It is not only the physical or the material needs, but it is more important to feed the soul. When you nurture your soul, everything else will follow and change (like your outlook on life). I believe this beatitude is one of the most important because people need to see that God has given everything to us and we need to appreciate His works and act upon it.
During the class discussion, or the "speed dating" activity, I realized most of my classmates and I had similar insights of the interpretation of the Beatitudes. Although everyone said different examples, we knew the point we wanted to get across and was similar. Also, everyone I was partners with had a different experience with or witnessed the Beatitudes. People witnessed the Beatitudes, in real life or the in news, or helped others realize the purpose of the Beatitudes. For instance, when someone was in need of help, their advice of the Beatitudes and interpretation helped them preserve their faith in God and try to move on from their issues to become a stronger person. This discussion helped me realize that not only other people had similar experiences with the Beatitudes, but that helping others in a time of need helps them become a better and stronger individual.
The Beatitudes should be learned and known by everyone. The Beatitudes can be a source of advice for others in need of faith and hope. Also, if I influence my friends and family on the purpose of the Beatitudes, I believe the Beatitudes will be a constant practice around me. Daily practice of humility is the best way to practice the Beatitudes and influence others. Being humble will strengthen an individual's faith because they will constantly see God and mirror the actions of Jesus. Also, being humble will show your care and goodness to others. The Beatitudes can sustain the goodness of humanity.
